1999 US Open Pictures
I attended the 1999 US Open on Wednesday, September 1 and again on
Monday, September 6.
Here is a brief report on some of the players I saw as well as
links to pictures I took. I also got a nice shot of the
unisphere.
- Monica Seles.
Monica was seeded #4 this year. She made it as far as the quarterfinals where
she lost to #7 seed and eventual champion Serena Williams. Monica teamed with
Mary Joe Fernandez in the doubles.
They were seeded #10 and got to the quarterfinals where they lost to the
#5 seeds and eventual champions Serena and Venus Williams.

- Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario.
A former US Open champion, Arantxa was seeded #10 this year. She made it to
the fourth round where she lost to #1 Martina Hingis. She got to the semifinals
in the women's doubles with partner Larisa Neiland. They were seeded #6.

- Yevgeny Kafelnikov.
Yevgeny, this year's Australian Open champion, was seeded #3.
He lived up to that seeding by advancing all the way to the
semifinals before losing to #2 seed and eventual champion Andre Agassi.

- Jana Novotna.
Jana, the #8 seed, lost in the third round to Anke Huber. Seeded #1 in
doubles, Jana and her partner Natasha Zvereva lost in the third round
to the #16 seeded team of Liezel Horn and Kimberly Po. Jana later
announced that she'd retire from the tour at the end of the year.

- Goran Ivanisevic.
Goran was unseeded this year and lost in the third round to #5 seed Gustavo
Kuerten. Goran partnered in the doubles with Jeff Tarango. They were
seeded #13 but lost in the first round.

- Mary Pierce.
Seeded #5, Mary lost in the quarterfinals to #2 seed Lindsay Davenport.
She was seeded #12 in women's doubles with partner Barbara Schett. They
made it to the semifinals before falling to the eventual champions Serena
and Venus Williams. Mary paired with John-Laffnie deJager in the mixed
doubles. They were the #8 seeds and made it to the quarterfinals where
they lost the the #2 seeds and eventual champions Ai Sugiyama and Mahesh
Bhupathi.

- Amelie Mauresmo.
Amelie, a finalist at this year's Australina Open, lived up to her #15 seed by
making it to the fourth round where she lost to Anke Huber.

- Marcelo Rios.
Marcelo, a former #1 ranked player, was seeded #10 this year. He advanced to
the fourth round where he was upset by unseeded Nicolas Escude.

- Andrei Medvedev.
A finalist at this year's French Open, Andrei got to the fourth round at
this year's US Open. He lost to #3 seeded Yevgeny Kafelnikov.

- Jennifer Capriati.
Jennifer is back! Unseeded, she beat #11 seed Nathalie Tauziat to get
to the fourth round where she lost to #4 seed Monica Seles. Jennifer
teamed with Mirjana Lucic in the women's doubles. They lost a tough
(three tie-break sets) first round match to Catalina Cristea and
Ruxandra Dragomir.

- Mary Joe Fernandez.
Mary Joe was unseeded this year but made it to the fourth round where she
lost to #3 seed Venus Williams. She teamed with Monica Seles in the doubles.
They were seeded #10 and got to the quarterfinals where they lost to the
#5 seeds and eventual champions Serena and Venus Williams.

- Nicolas Escude.
Nicolas, a qualifier, made it all the way to the quarterfinals beating
two seeded players (#8 Carlos Moya and #10 Marcelo Rios). He finally
went down in the quarterfinals to #2 seed and eventual champion Andre
Agassi.

- Jonas Bjorkman.
Jonas made it to the third round where he lost to #3 seed Yevgeny
Kafelnikov. He partnered with Byron Black in the men's doubles.
They were seeded #7 and advanced all
the way to the semifinals where they lost to #11 seeds and eventual
champions Lareau/O'Brien.

- Jan-Michael Gambill.
Jan-Michael had to retire in the fifth set (which was tied at 4-4 at the time)
of his second round match because of cramping. He and partner Adam Peterson
also lost in the second round of the doubles to #1 seeds Bhupathi/Paes.

- Justin Gimelstob.
Justin lost in the third round to #2 seed and eventual champion Andre
Agassi. He was seeded #15 in men's doubles with partner Richey Reneberg.
They made it to the third round before losing to #1 seeds Bhupathi/Paes.

- Richey Reneberg.
Richey lost to #7 seed and finalist Todd Martin in the second round.
He teamed with Justin Gimelstob in the doubles. Seeded #15, they made it
to the third round before losing to the #1 seeds Bhupathi/Paes.

Wayne upset #13 seed Alex Corretja in the first round before losing in
the second round to Lleyton Hewitt.

Marat lost in the second round to Jiri Novak.

Kenneth lost in the second round to Jonas Bjorkman.

- Mikael Tillstrom.
Mikael was a "lucky loser" - he lost in the last round of the
qualifying tournament but got a spot in the main draw when #1 seed Pete
Sampras had to withdraw from the tournament with an injury. Mikael
wasn't so lucky in the main draw where he lost to Marat Safin in
the first round.

- Stefan Koubek.
Stefan lost a first round match to Jan-Michael Gambill.

- Mirjana Lucic.
Mirjana teamed with Jennifer Capriati in the women's doubles. They
lost in the first round.

Byron lost in the first round to Younes El Aynanoui. He was seeded #7
in the men's doubles with partner Jonas Bjorkman. They advanced all
the way to the semifinals where they lost to #11 seeds and eventual
champions Lareau/O'Brien.

- Mahesh Bhupathi/Leander Paes.
Mahesh Bhupathi and Leander Paes were the #1 seeds in men's doubles. They
made it the the finals, losing to the #11 seeded team of Lareau/O'Brien.
They each also had top seedings in the mixed doubles. Leander and Lisa
Raymond were seeded #1 but were upset in the second round by Kimberly Po
and Donald Johnson. Mahesh teamed with Ai Sugiyama as the #2 seeds.
They went on to win the title, beating Po/Johnson in the finals.

- The Woodies.
Mark Woodforde was beaten by Peter Wessels in the second round. He and
Todd Woodbridge were seeded #3 in men's doubles. They lost in the
quarterfinals to #11 seeds and eventual champions Lareau/O'Brien.
Todd also got to the semifinals in mixed doubles with partner
Rennae Stubbs.

- Wayne Black/Sandon Stolle.
Wayne and Sandon were seeded #6 in men's doubles. They made it to
the quarterfinals where they lost to Olhovskly/Prinosil.

Donald and Cyril were seeded #12 in men's doubles. They made it to
the third round where they lost to #6 seeds Wayne Black and Sandon
Stolle. Donald made it to the finals of the mixed doubles with
Kimberly Po.

- Alberto Martin/Javier Sanchez.
Alberto, a Spanish player, lost in the first round of the men's singles to
#3 seed Yevgeny Kafelnikov. He and his partner Javier Sanchez also lost
in the first round of the doubles to the #12 seed Donald Johnson and Cyril Suk.

- Virginia Wade.
A former US Open and Wimbledon champion Virginia played the seniors
mixed doubles with Cliff Drysdale.
